Volunteer Opportunities:
Overview
The Humane League offers many opportunities for interested
individuals to gain experience working with animals, learn
more about animal welfare issues, and work with other animal
lovers to improve the lives of animals in our community. Volunteers
can work directly with the animals, or support the work of
the shelter through raising money, educating the public, or
providing administrative assistance. Due to the generously
donated time and assistance of volunteers the shelter can
offer many high quality programs and services to Lancaster
County pets and residents.
The Behavioral Assistance and Rehabilitation Club (BARC) -
FACT: Dogs that are calmer have a better chance of finding a permanent home.
FACT: Most dogs that come into a shelter environment – even if they are great pets - are stressed out and being calm is not something that comes easily if at all.
FACT: Stress and anxiety are inevitable when living in a shelter environment – regardless of the time that is spent there.
The BARC program is designed to teach volunteers how to effectively interact with the dogs both in and out of the kennels in order to improve their chances for adoption. By providing a structured environment to the dog’s daily life and creating expectations, we are reducing stress and creating a more calm, relaxed atmosphere. When the dog handler use the techniques learned from the BARC program, the staff is enabled to inform the potential adopters of the dog’s true behavior and personality. It will also allow the staff to match families to the dogs who will best fit into their lives and will help dogs to transition into their new homes with less stress for owner and dog. There will be levels of advancement, competitions, etc. for the participants to showcase their talents and abilities; this will also allow the participants to move on to the next training level. Essentially, by instilling some basic obedience commands, teaching proper kennel etiquette, enforcing universal training techniques and socialization dogs will have the best possible chance of being adopted. To join this program individuals must have completed the direct animal care training, 10 hours of volunteer service, and must attend the BARC classes to complete the training and become a part of the program.
For more information on this program contact Tiffany Fickes
Direct Animal Care (Animal
Care Technician Assistant) -
Working directly with the animals requires successful completion
of training in kennel procedures and animal handling.
Fundraising Volunteers –
Meet new people and have fun helping a great cause! Throughout
the year, the Humane League of Lancaster County holds four
major fundraising events to support our mission. Volunteers
are needed for many things! You can join one of the committees
and volunteer your professional and personal skills to better
plan, promote, and expand an event. We also need good “worker
bees” to make pick ups/deliveries and volunteer time
on the ay of an event. Whatever your interests, we can find
a place for YOU!
Friends for Spay/Neuter -
This group is dedicated to promoting spaying and neutering
as the primary means of overpopulation control. Volunteers
attend various community events to sell merchandise to support these programs.
Educational Programs - (More)
Our Humane Educator, Megan Gallagher Clark, has opportunities for volunteers
to help her with programs that she brings to groups around
the area. She needs creative people to help her make educational
bulletin boards, and make presentations to small groups. Please
contact Megan at 393-6551, ext. 233 or Email.
Want to help the Humane League of Lancaster County, but do not have time to volunteer? Please consider hosting a dog bank at your place of business. The donations will
go directly to helping Lancaster County animals in need. For more information,
contact Miranda Troccoli, at (717) 393-6551 ext. 234.
