That Perfect Smile: a Seminar on Dental Health for Your Pet

Dr. Bryan Langlois, Medical Director at the Humane League of Lancaster, will be holding the first seminar of his monthly seminar series on basic pet health and husbandry. On Saturday, February 25 at 11 am , this seminar The Perfect Smile: Easy to Understand Information about the Dental Health of Your Pet will be held in the Pond Room at That Fish Place in Centerville.

This seminar will cover all the basic information on dental care and health. Topics that are included : an explanation of dental health in pets, preventative care (brushing and caring for their teeth), veterinary teeth cleaning and extraction, basic dental diseases of pets, what owners options are when it comes to dental problems, and a special section specifically on feline teeth issues focusing on inflammatory conditions of the mouth and gums seen in cats.
This seminar will be free to the public and no reservation is required. People attending are encouraged to bring a food donation for the Pet Pantry ( dry cat food is the greatest need) or a monetary donation to the Humane League.

30 Dogs and Counting

– Over 30 dogs were seized today from a Gordonville property, by Dog Law Enforcement Officers. The dogs were removed from the property due to neglect and unsanitary conditions inside the home. According to Danielle Ball, the Director of Humane Enforcement at the Humane League, "Many of the dogs are very underweight, appear to be in poor physical condition, and will need socialization."

The seized dogs are mostly smaller mixed breeds: miniature poodles, shih-tzu, and terrier mixes. The majority of these dogs after receiving medical attention will then enter our foster program, which will give them a chance to socialize and acclimate to a normal, healthy home life.

Less than two hours later, the Humane League received 20 more dogs from a condemned house in Lancaster City. The dogs seized from this home are also residing at the shelter until they are treated by the medical staff and then evaluated by our kennel technicians. This means the Humane League received 50 dogs today.

The cost of housing, feeding, and providing medical care for this number of dogs, in addition to the regular number of dogs we receive on a daily basis, is a great concern. “It costs the Humane League on average $200 to provide basic care per dog under normal circumstances. These dogs will require much more time and medical services due to their poor condition," said Becki Meiss, Vice President of Operations. The Humane League is at full capacity because of the rescued dogs. Thankfully, the Humane Society of Berks County has agreed to transport some already available dogs to their facility. Low Cost Vaccine Clinic for Cats

Do you need a Valentine for your beloved feline friend ? The Humane League is offering a low cost vaccine clinic for cats only. For $10 ( cash or check) each cat will receive a FVRCP vaccine and rabies vaccine. For the safety of your cat please bring him or her in a secure carrier. This is an open event so no appointments are necessary.

Starting Sunday, February 12, 2012, our Sunday News Pet of the Week will be available for adoption at our offsite adoption center, That Fish Place, That Pet Place. The adoption center is located at 237 Centerville Rd., Lancaster. Offsite adoption hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Our main shelter is now closed on Sundays as of Jan. 1, 2012. $ 10 Vaccine Clinic for Dogs

The HLLC is happy to announce that it will be holding a low cost vaccine clinic for dogs only. The cost will be $10 (cash or check ) per dog and will include both a rabies and a distemper vaccination. This clinic will be held rain or shine since this is an indoor location. For everyone’s safety, please make sure your dog is on a secure leash and collar.

300 Pets Receive Low Cost Vaccines

The cat and dog low cost vaccine clinics were a great success. 300 hundred cats and dogs were vaccinated. In addition, the low cost vaccine clinics are a great way to get the community involved in animal health and to spread the importance of having your cat or dog vaccinated. The HLLC would like to extend a "thank you" to That Fish Place That Pet Place for allowing us to hold the low cost vaccine clinics at their store. Since the response to these clinics was so positive, the HLLC is planning on holding more low cost vaccine clinics in the future. However, no dates have been set.

Second Annual Birthday Bash for Puppy Mill Survivor

Need something to do Saturday night? Well, why not join us for Leo's Second Annual Birthday Bash! Leo is a six year old poodle who was rescued from a puppy mill. He gallantly represents the Humane League throughout the community by attending special events. In generous partnership with the Senft Family, owners of Natural Stoneworks, we are holding our second birthday party in Leo’s honor to bring the community together and to benefit homeless pets. Well behaved, leashed furry friends are more than welcome to attend and enjoy a pet friendly cake and buffet. Human refreshments will also be provided. While there is no cost for this event, attendees must bring an item from our wish list or make a financial donation at the door to benefit the League's animals.
