Animal Cruelty
The Humane League of Lancaster is dedicated to creating a humane community where all pets are protected and wanted. We employ two, full time Humane Officers who work in cooperation with local and state law enforcement agencies, the District Attorney’s Office, Probation and Parole Offices, as well as Children and Youth Services. Our officers respond to approximately 800 reports of animal abuse and neglect each year including reports of dog fighting, rooster fighting, incidents regarding no shelter, no food or water, unsanitary living conditions, inadequate veterinary care and physical abuse. The officers enforce the laws of the State of Pennsylvania regarding animal abuse and neglect under PA State Crimes Code Title 18 Sec. 5511.
If you suspect a case of animal abuse, cruelty, or neglect, contact the shelter immediately at (717) 393-6551 and ask to speak to a Humane Police Officer. All information will be kept confidential.
ORCA (The Organization for the Responsibility and Care of Animals) also investigates cases of animal cruelty. They can be reached 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (717) 397-8922.
