Foster Care

The Humane League of Lancaster County's Foster Care Program is focused on saving the lives of the
Kittens in Foster Caremost innocent and vulnerable animals. Animals who are too young or too sick to be placed up for adoption find refuge with our foster care families. Foster homes also provide a safe haven for animals who have been neglected or abused and are being held as evidence in ongoing court cases. Animals who are part of our foster care program benefit from the individualized attention that they receive in a home environment. The Humane League currently has over 100 active foster families who provide care for nearly 800 animals each year. Each animal who is part of our unique foster care program is one more homeless pet who has a second chance at finding a loving and permanent home.

Why I Support the Foster Care Program

by Janet Easterwood, stay at home mom and HLLC foster parent

It has been almost six years since I received a much anticipated phone call that I had been approved to foster animals for the Humane League of Lancaster County. A litter of kittens was waiting for me! I couldn't wait to bring them home! Since that first litter, many more cats, kittens, puppies, and birds have entered my home and heart. Most of my fosters have been kittens that were too young to be adopted. Some were sick or injured and just needed time to heal.

I am known in my neighborhood as the "kitten lady." Neighbors, friends, my childrens' teachers, and even my dental hygienists have adopted kittens whom I have fostered! I am frequently rewarded with updates and pictures. I love seeing the beautiful adult creatures they have become.

The most frequently asked question I get is: "How can you take them back to the Humane League, don]t you get attached?"It took a while to learn how to care for my fosters and then give them up. I still get attached but the joy of seeing my fosters united with their forever families makes the sorrow melt away. I did have one "foster failure," a term rescuers use when they decide to keep a foster and make her a permanent part of the family. Her name is Whisper, a beautiful white deaf pit bull mix. She entered my life at the age of 5wks and never left!

If you have room in your heart and home please consider joining the foster care program. The Humane League provides everything you need including food, supplies, and veterinary care. All that you supply is love, attention, and the chance for a new beginning!
