Coming to the aid of pets in crisis is a core part of our mission. River and Dutch have been fortunate enough to experience firsthand the compassion and care made possible only by our members’ support. Because of our members, we have been rescuing, sheltering and placing animals in permanent homes for almost one hundred years.
River and Dutch are just two real life examples of how your membership directly saves lives. People talk a lot about making a difference. Becoming a member doesn’t just make a difference – it makes everything better for each individual animal whose life is saved by your support.

River's Story
The fact that River survived at all is a miracle. River was rescued by a Good Samaritan who spotted the six week old kitten as he tumbled into a swollen creek during the severe flooding earlier this fall. The woman waded into the water to bring him to safety. At the Humane League, River not only found a safe place to recover, he found a loving foster home with one of our staff members. In fact, his foster parents have fallen in love with River and have now decided to adopt him!
Dutch's Story
Dutch arrived at the Humane League after being hit by a car. He suffered extensive injuries to both of his back legs, including a dislocated hip and fracture and severe road rash that exposed his muscle. Dutch has endured countless bandage changes and one surgery so far on his road to recovery. Our veterinarian team has fallen in love with his gentle personality and determined spirit. We’re looking forward to the day when Dutch will walk out of the shelter on all four legs with his new family!
